Do I Need a VPN?
You do not automatically need a VPN. You need one if you regularly use networks you do not control, you care that a US ISP can see destinations, you travel with subscriptions that break abroad, or you share files on BitTorrent. You can skip one if you never leave a trusted home network and you are fine with ISP-level visibility. This page is a decision guide, not a sales page.

These scenarios make a VPN essential — not optional:
You use public Wi-Fi regularly Coffee shops, airports, hotels, co-working spaces, and libraries all have networks that are vulnerable to eavesdropping. A VPN encrypts all your traffic on these networks, preventing man-in-the-middle attacks, packet sniffing, and DNS hijacking. If you work remotely or travel frequently, this alone justifies a VPN.
You want to stop your ISP from selling your data Since 2017, US ISPs have been legally allowed to collect and sell your browsing data without your consent. Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all have data collection programs. A VPN prevents your ISP from seeing which websites you visit. This is a fundamental privacy issue that affects every American internet user.

You handle sensitive data remotely Journalists, lawyers, medical professionals, financial advisors — anyone who handles confidential information over the internet should use a VPN, especially on networks they don't control.
When a VPN Is Helpful but Not Essential
These scenarios benefit from a VPN, but you could arguably get by without one:
General browsing at home A VPN prevents your ISP from logging your activity, which is a real privacy benefit. But if you're not concerned about ISP data collection and you trust your home network, the risk is lower than on public Wi-Fi.
Online shopping A VPN can help you avoid price discrimination (different prices based on detected location) and adds a layer of encryption when entering payment information. However, HTTPS already encrypts your payment data in transit.
Gaming A VPN can reduce latency if your ISP routes inefficiently, protect against DDoS attacks in competitive gaming, and prevent ISP throttling. But it can also add latency if you connect to a distant server. See our gaming VPN guide.
Social media A VPN prevents your ISP from seeing which social platforms you use and adds IP-level privacy. But social platforms track you through your account regardless of your IP address.
When You Don't Need a VPN
A VPN is not a magic privacy shield. It won't help in these situations:
If you're already logged into accounts A VPN masks your IP, but if you're logged into Google, Facebook, or Amazon, those companies know exactly who you are and what you're doing. A VPN doesn't prevent account-level tracking.
For protection against malware and phishing A VPN encrypts your traffic in transit but doesn't scan for malware or block phishing emails. You need antivirus software and common sense for those threats. (NordVPN's Threat Protection does add some malware blocking, but it's not a replacement for dedicated security software.)
If you think a VPN makes you invisible A VPN boosts your privacy significantly, but it doesn't make you invisible. Browser fingerprinting, cookies, tracking pixels, and account activity all still work. For comprehensive privacy, you need a VPN + privacy-focused browser + tracker blockers + good security hygiene.
On a trusted, secure private network If you're on your own hardened home network with a reputable ISP and aren't concerned about ISP data collection, the security risk is relatively low. A VPN still provides ISP privacy benefits, but it's less critical than on public Wi-Fi.
The Real Privacy Stack: VPN + Other Tools
A VPN is one layer in a comprehensive privacy setup. Here's the full stack for serious privacy:
Layer 1: VPN — Encrypts traffic, masks IP, prevents ISP surveillance
Layer 2: Privacy Browser — Firefox with strict tracking protection, or Brave. Blocks third-party cookies, fingerprinting, and tracker scripts
Layer 3: DNS-Level Blocking — Use your VPN's built-in blocker (NordVPN Threat Protection, Surfshark CleanWeb) or a standalone DNS blocker (Pi-hole, NextDNS)
Layer 4: Password Manager — Unique passwords for every account prevent credential stuffing. Bitwarden and 1Password are top choices
Layer 5: Two-Factor Authentication — Hardware keys (YubiKey) or authenticator apps (not SMS) for critical accounts
Layer 6: Encrypted Messaging — Signal for private communications
Layer 7: Device Encryption — FileVault (macOS), BitLocker (Windows), built-in encryption (iOS, Android)
No single tool provides complete privacy. A VPN is arguably the highest-impact single step because it protects all your traffic from your ISP and network-level threats. But it's most effective when combined with the other layers.
Cost vs. Value: Is a VPN Worth the Money?
Long-term intro plans from known providers are usually a few dollars per month. Confirm the renewal price at checkout — that is the number that matters next year.
You are paying for: less ISP visibility, safer public Wi-Fi, optional travel continuity, and a kill switch for P2P. You are not paying for invisibility or a malware lab.
If you use public Wi-Fi weekly, the value is easy. If you never leave a trusted home LAN and you do not care about ISP data programs, spend the money on a password manager first.
