Double VPN & Multi-Hop Explained
**Double VPN** (also called **multi-hop** or **VPN cascading**) routes your traffic through **two VPN servers** in different countries instead of one. Each server only knows part of the picture — the first sees your real IP but not your destination, while the second sees your destination but not your real IP. For users with elevated privacy needs (journalists, activists, researchers), multi-hop adds a meaningful layer of separation. With a standard VPN connection, your traffic flows: You → VPN Server → Internet. The VPN server sees both your real IP address and your destination — it has the complete picture. If that single server were compromised or compelled to log, your full activity could be reconstructed.
With a multi-hop VPN, traffic flows: You → VPN Server #1 → VPN Server #2 → Internet. Server #1 sees your real IP but only knows you're connecting to Server #2. Server #2 sees your destination but only knows the traffic came from Server #1, not your real IP.
For an attacker (or government) to deanonymize you, they would need to compromise both servers, ideally located in different jurisdictions with different legal regimes — a much higher bar than compromising a single server.
Multi-Hop Implementations: Top Providers
Several major VPNs offer multi-hop with slightly different approaches:
NordVPN — Double VPN — Pre-configured server pairs in different countries (e.g., US → Canada, UK → Netherlands). Easy to use: one click in the app. Available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android. Uses OpenVPN protocol (slower than NordLynx).

Speed Cost of Multi-Hop
Routing traffic through two servers instead of one introduces additional latency and reduces maximum throughput. Expect:
- Latency increase: noticeable additional latency, depending on the geographic distance between server pairs
- Speed reduction: Typically slower than a single-hop connection on the same provider
For everyday browsing, the speed reduction is usually unnoticeable. For high-bandwidth activities like 4K streaming or large downloads, you may need to switch back to single-hop. - You're handling highly sensitive communications where deanonymization would have serious consequences
- You have a specific reason to distrust a single server's jurisdiction but want to chain through a privacy-friendlier exit country
For general privacy, productivity, and security on public Wi-Fi, single-hop with published privacy is more than sufficient and significantly faster. Don't pay the speed cost unless your threat model genuinely warrants it.
Multi-Hop vs. Tor: Which Is More Private?
Tor (The Onion Router) routes traffic through three randomly-chosen relay nodes operated by volunteers worldwide, with each node knowing only the previous and next hop. It's free and provides stronger anonymity than any VPN multi-hop, but is dramatically slower (often unusable for video).
Multi-hop VPN routes through two servers operated by your VPN provider. Less anonymous than Tor (because both servers are run by the same company) but vastly faster.
Tor over VPN combines both: connect to your VPN first, then use the Tor browser. ProtonVPN includes a built-in 'Tor over VPN' option that routes traffic into the Tor network from a VPN server. This combines VPN-level speed for the first hop with Tor-level anonymity for the rest of the path.
