How to Hide My IP Address from Websites and Trackers

Your public IP address is the street address of your internet connection. Every site you visit can see an approximate city and your ISP. Advertisers and data brokers use that as one of many signals. Hiding it is straightforward if you use a full-device VPN and then check for leaks. It is not the same as becoming anonymous. This guide walks through the practical steps for a US laptop or phone — and what still identifies you after the IP changes.

What an IP address actually reveals

A public IPv4 or IPv6 address tells a site which network you are on. That is usually enough for city-level location and ISP name (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, a local fiber co-op). It is not your home street address. It is still enough for:

  • Price and content differences by region
  • Ad-tech “household” grouping when combined with cookies
  • Copyright complaints on BitTorrent (your IP is visible to every peer)
  • Account-security alerts that flag a new city

If you only hide the IP in one browser and leave the rest of the phone on the raw connection, apps still see the real address. That is why a system VPN beats a browser-only extension for this job.

The reliable method: a full-device VPN

A consumer VPN app installs a virtual network adapter and routes traffic through an encrypted tunnel. Destination sites see the VPN server’s IP.

Practical setup:

  1. Pick a provider with a published privacy policy and a refund window. Start from our reviews if you want a shortlist.
  2. Install the official Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android app — not a random APK or “cracked” installer.
  3. Turn on the kill switch so a dropped tunnel does not dump your real IP onto a website or torrent swarm. See VPN kill switch.
  4. Connect to a nearby US server if you only want privacy. Use another country only when you have a specific reason.
  5. Confirm the change with What Is My IP.

Browser extensions that “change IP” often cover only that browser, and some free extensions have a poor trust record. Prefer the system app.

Check for the leaks that undo the work

A VPN that “shows a new IP” on one website can still leak elsewhere.

  • DNS leak — your device asks your ISP “where is this domain?” even though the page load goes through the VPN. Run our DNS leak test. Every resolver should belong to the VPN, not Comcast or Google on your home line.
  • WebRTC leak — browsers can expose a local or public IP through WebRTC. Run our WebRTC leak test.
  • IPv6 leak — some apps tunnel IPv4 only. If your ISP gives you IPv6, turn on the app’s IPv6 leak protection or disable IPv6 on that adapter while you test.
  • Split tunneling — an excluded app uses the real IP on purpose. That is fine for a printer. It is not fine for a torrent client you meant to hide.

Do these checks after every new install, not once in a lifetime.

Trackers that ignore your IP

Changing IP does not log you out of Google, Meta, Amazon, or your bank. Those services already know the account. Cookies, advertising IDs, and browser fingerprints also survive a new IP.

Useful extras, not substitutes:

  • Block known tracker domains with the VPN’s optional filter (NordVPN Threat Protection, Surfshark CleanWeb) or a resolver you chose on purpose
  • Use a password manager so lookalike phishing sites fail autofill
  • Limit third-party cookies and unnecessary location permissions
  • On Android, review which apps can ignore VPN (some always-on exceptions exist)

If your threat model is “I do not want random sites to see my home ISP,” a VPN plus leak checks is enough. If your threat model is “nobody should be able to link sessions,” you need a much stricter stack (separate browser profile, fewer accounts, sometimes Tor). See VPN vs Tor.

Special case: BitTorrent and other P2P

In a torrent swarm, every peer can log the IP that is uploading or downloading. A VPN with a documented P2P policy and a working kill switch is the usual consumer approach. Connect first, then open the client. If the tunnel drops, the kill switch should halt traffic instead of exposing your home IP.

Can you hide an IP without a VPN?

  • Tor Browser hides the IP for that browser only. It is slower and many sites show CAPTCHAs. Good for specific sessions, poor as a whole-phone solution.
  • Proxy changes the IP for one app and often skips encryption. See VPN vs proxy.
  • Carrier / CGNAT already shares IPs among many mobile users. That is not a privacy tool you control, and it does not encrypt café Wi-Fi.
  • iCloud Private Relay (Safari, paid iCloud+) hides Safari’s IP from websites. Other apps still use your real IP. It can also conflict with a VPN.
