What Is a VPN Router?
A VPN router is a router that connects to a VPN server and encrypts all internet traffic for every device on your network — including smart TVs, game consoles, IoT devices, and anything else that can't install a VPN app. Instead of configuring VPN software on each device individually, a VPN router provides network-wide protection from a single point.

Every router manages traffic between your local network and the internet. A VPN router adds an extra step: it encrypts all that traffic through a VPN tunnel before it reaches your ISP.
Regular Router: 1. Your device sends a request 2. The router forwards it to your ISP 3. The ISP routes it to the destination
VPN Router: 1. Your device sends a request 2. The router encrypts the request 3. The encrypted request goes to the VPN server 4. The VPN server decrypts it and forwards it to the destination
The critical advantage: every device on your Wi-Fi is automatically protected. Smart speakers, baby monitors, security cameras, smart thermostats — devices that often have no way to install VPN software — all get encryption.
This is particularly important for IoT devices, which often have weak security and send unencrypted data. A VPN router ensures that even poorly secured devices can't leak your information to your ISP.
Types of VPN Routers
There are three main approaches to getting a VPN router:
1. Pre-Configured VPN Routers Routers that come with VPN client software ready to use. The ExpressVPN Aircove is the best example — plug it in, enter your credentials, and you have whole-home VPN protection. No technical knowledge required.
2. VPN-Compatible Routers Many off-the-shelf routers support VPN client connections through their built-in firmware. Asus routers with Asuswrt or Asuswrt-Merlin firmware are the most popular choice. 3. Custom Firmware Routers Flash your router with open-source firmware like OpenWrt or DD-WRT to add VPN client capabilities. This offers the most control and customization but requires technical knowledge. Not all routers support custom firmware.

Performance Considerations
The biggest limitation of VPN routers is speed. Your router's CPU must encrypt and decrypt every packet of data — a computationally intensive task.
Expected VPN throughput by router class:
- Budget routers (single-core <1 GHz): lower to moderate throughput with OpenVPN, lower throughput with WireGuard
- Mid-range routers (dual-core 1–1.4 GHz): moderate throughput with OpenVPN, higher throughput with WireGuard
- High-end routers (quad-core 1.8+ GHz): higher throughput with OpenVPN, higher throughput with WireGuard
- ExpressVPN Aircove: Higher reported throughput with Lightway protocol
Key performance tips:
- Always use WireGuard instead of OpenVPN on your router — it's 2–3x faster
- Connect to the nearest VPN server to minimize latency
- If your internet speed exceeds your router's VPN throughput, consider upgrading to a more powerful router
- Use split tunneling (policy-based routing) to send only sensitive traffic through the VPN
If you have a 500+ Mbps internet connection and want full VPN throughput, you'll need a high-end router or dedicated VPN appliance.
Setting Up WireGuard on an Asus Router
Asus routers with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware offer the simplest setup for WireGuard VPN:
Step 1: Get your VPN configuration - Log into your VPN provider's website (NordVPN, Surfshark, etc.) - Download a WireGuard configuration file for your preferred server location - This file contains the server address, encryption keys, and DNS settings
Step 2: Configure the router 1. Log into your Asus router at 192.168.1.1 (or router.asus.com) 2. Go to VPN > VPN Client 3. Click Add Profile 4. Select WireGuard as the protocol 5. Import your configuration file or enter details manually 6. Click Apply
Step 3: Enable and test 1. Toggle the VPN connection to ON 2. Wait for the status to show "Connected" 3. Visit a site like whatismyipaddress.com from any device on your network 4. Verify it shows the VPN server's IP, not your real IP
Step 4: Configure policy routing (optional) In the VPN client settings, you can specify which devices use the VPN and which connect directly. This is useful for devices that don't work well with VPNs (some smart home hubs, local network devices).
VPN Router vs. VPN App: Which Is Better?
Both approaches have advantages:
VPN Router advantages: - Protects ALL devices, including those that can't run VPN apps - Set-and-forget — no need to remember to connect - One connection covers your entire household - Protects IoT devices with weak built-in security
VPN App advantages: - Faster — dedicated apps use your device's powerful CPU for encryption - More features — split tunneling, kill switch, protocol switching - Portable — protection follows you outside your home - Easier to set up and change servers
Best approach: Use both. Run a VPN on your router for baseline protection of all home devices, and use VPN apps on your laptop and phone for when you're away from home.
