Best VPN for Apple TV (2026)

Reviewed April 15, 2026

Apple TV used to be one of the hardest devices to use a VPN with — tvOS didn't allow VPN apps until Apple added the necessary APIs in tvOS 17 (late 2023). Now, the top VPN providers ship genuine native Apple TV apps, downloadable directly from the tvOS App Store. No more router workarounds, no more Smart DNS hacks. This guide ranks the best Apple TV VPNs based on verifiable native tvOS app availability and feature parity with their iOS counterparts.

How we pick for this use case

This shortlist is an editorial buying map from public app lists, privacy pages, refund terms, and device docs — not an in-house speed lab. Dated first-party notes belong on each review page as those slots fill. This page does not invent Mbps or streaming pass/fail.

During the refund window, connect on the device you actually use, then run What Is My IP, a DNS leak test, and a WebRTC leak test. If the app or your paid services fail your routine, use the refund.

tvOS 17 and the Native VPN App Era

Before tvOS 17 (released September 2023), Apple TV didn't support VPN apps at all. Users had to either configure their router as a VPN client (slow and complicated) or rely on Smart DNS (which doesn't encrypt traffic).

With tvOS 17, Apple opened the NetworkExtension framework to tvOS. Within months, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, and Private Internet Access all shipped native Apple TV apps. These apps work just like their iOS counterparts: open the app, tap Connect, and your entire Apple TV's traffic is encrypted.

Hardware Requirements

Native VPN apps require Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K running tvOS 17 or later. Apple TV HD (formerly the 4th generation) was first released in 2015 and supports tvOS 17. Apple TV 4K supports tvOS 17 across all generations.

If you have an older 3rd-generation Apple TV, you cannot install VPN apps. Your only option is to configure your router as a VPN client and connect the Apple TV through that router. ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer DNS is also available as a non-encrypting workaround.

Smart DNS vs. Native VPN

Smart DNS (like ExpressVPN MediaStreamer or Surfshark Smart DNS) reroutes only DNS queries through a remote server. It's fast and works on every device, but it does not encrypt your traffic — your ISP can still see what you're doing.

A native VPN app encrypts everything. For Apple TV users on tvOS 17+, the native app is always the better choice. Save Smart DNS for older Apple TVs or non-Apple smart TVs that can't run a VPN client.
