How to Use a VPN on Your TV

A VPN on your TV serves two main purposes:

1. Access your home subscriptions while traveling If you have a TV at a vacation home, rental, or hotel (using a travel device like a streaming stick), a VPN lets you connect to your home region's servers and access the services you pay for.

2. Privacy from your ISP Your ISP can see every service and app your smart TV connects to. A VPN encrypts this traffic, preventing your ISP from logging your viewing habits and selling that data.

Smart TVs are also known for aggressive data collection. Many TV manufacturers track your viewing habits through ACR (Automatic Content Recognition). While a VPN doesn't disable ACR, it prevents your ISP from supplementing that data with your broader internet activity.

This method is free and works immediately but requires your computer to stay on and connected during viewing.

Some TV platforms support VPN apps directly:
